What’s up next for Lugz Endorser Phil Davis? Well its in the cards…the fight card that is.
The UFC has announced that Phil Davis will compete against former Ultimate Fighter 8 runner up Vinny Magalhaes at UFC 159 which will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey come April 27,2013. Phil is not feeling so “Wonderful” about this fight, which according to Davis is an immature match-up. The way Phil sees it…Magalhaes has’nt accomplished enough inside the Octagon to warrant a fight against him.Although Magalhaes racked up a 7-1 record…only 1 of those wins came under the UFC umbrella, clearly not impressing enough for Davis who has 6 fights under the ZUFFA Banner and who was one fight shy from the UFC title had he defeated Rashad Evans a year ago. Nevertheless, despite having only one win, Vinny will get his much-desired chance to PROVE that he deserves to share the Octagon with “Mr. Wonderful”.

Share your thoughts! Does Vinny deserve such a high-profile fight on such a highly-anticipated event?

Playstation 4 Is Here: You Game?

Sony made a big announcement last week with regards to the launch of the Playstation 4 also knows as PS4 in the gaming community.  This long awaited arrival was very well received and the excitement is a little nutty for most.

The graphics are believed to be awe inspiring, which is to be expected in today’s day and age especially from Sony.  The unit and new controller have a totally new look and feel though not many have actually seen them both up close just yet.  Click the image provided in this post to see the promo-teaser and tell us what you think!

Did The Oscars Do The Right Thing?

The Oscars are on tonight and it is arguably the biggest of all awards shows.  It pales in comparison with regards to viewership when compared to The Superbowl, but there is no doubt it packs quite a punch in TV viewing power.

Anyway the Oscars is the end to the “awards season” and some names were left off of the list for the move industry’s greatest honor.  Most notably are Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow, both for Best Director of two of the years finest films, Argo and Zero Dark Thirty respectively. Both put together epic films and certainly deserved the nod.

As I was reading today about other snubs from the past, one of the most notable and ironic, given who it lost out to was Spike Lee’s gem (or joint as he would put it) Do The Right Thing.  This story about race, violence and New York City proved too controversial for voters. “What film won Best Picture in 1989?” Lee later asked The Hollywood Reporter. “ ‘Driving Miss Motherf – - king Daisy!’ That’s why [Oscars] don’t matter. Because 20 years later, who’s watching ‘Driving Miss Daisy?’  CRAZY

Duane Johnson Stars in “Snitch”

It’s Friday and everyone’s looking for something to get into. Why not catch the Flick “Snitch” which premieres today in theatres nationwide. This is a B-movie thriller starring Duane Johnson (you know WWE’s “The Rock”) built around a real incident that’s meant to show us the lunacy of our government’s drug policy. Unlike a lot of gritty action movies, it’s got a brain and some real feelings behind it.

The movie stars Johnson as John Matthews, a regular guy who owns his own construction company. He’s living the American dream…you know…the wife…the kids…the solid career. His life gets interrupted when he gets a call from his ex-wife that their son Jason (Rafi Gavron) has been arrested by the Feds for accepting a delivery from one of his buddies that contained ecstasy. Because of the U.S.’s mandatory-minimum laws, Jason will automatically receive a 10-year jail sentence, even though the kid isn’t involved with drugs or dealing. Hoping to get leniency for his son, John(played by Johnson) visits a U.S. Attorney (Susan Sarandon), who will grant Jason a lighter sentence if John can help the government bust other drug dealers.

Although director and co-writer Ric Roman goes his own way with it, the movie underlines the madness of a policy that levies huge penalties against anyone involved in drugs (even if they’re only partially connected) in the hopes that they’ll be desperate enough to assist the feds in rounding up other dealers while still bringing about a compassionate and angry sense of how deeply unfair American society is…whether we’re talking its drug policy or class system.

Eventually, Snitch becomes the action flick you assumed it would be, full of car chases and shootouts. But even then, Waugh stays mindful of the human element, reminding us of all the real lives ruined either by drugs or by a U.S. policy that overreacts to the problem.

Will you be grabbing your tickets and popcorn? Sound off.

The Girl Effect: A Global Issue

This viral video put out by The Girl Effect is so powerful. Their position as an organization is that “Adolescent girls are the most powerful force for change on the planet” and this video really tells the sad story for many girls around the planet in a very impactful way.

The point here is that we must pay attention and help young girls grow up to be women of purpose and substance. If we help them escape hardships such as early “forced” marriage, early childbirth and exposure to disease and the elements that we can empower generations of contributors to society. People who can change the world around them and help make this a better planet for us all.

Most of the readers of this blog are men and so is the writer of this entry.  That being said, I think this video really impacts us all and so i felt it was worth sharing.  It is kind of scary to think that there is such a negative future for so many people that we share the planet with, and hopefully we can come together to make change. This video is actually a bit old now, yet many of the problems still remain. We have made strides, but so much more is to be done.  Watch it here and share it with others!

As we reminisce about the last 20 years of the brand – one of the things that we think about, and are proud to share with you, is the amount of films that Lugz has been involved in.  We have had some great friendships and working relationships with some of the best Directors, Producers, Actors and of course, the Wardrobe Stylists.  So many films we have been invited to; our list still impresses us!

I’ve selected a few of my favorite to share with you –

HE GOT GAMEA Spike Lee Film – Who wasn’t rooting for Jesus Shuttleworth?  A son of a convicted fellon, with so much talent on the court.  The problem is that his father had one thing on his mind – get Jesus to sign with a big state college and receive a reduced sentence.  Check out Ray Allen sporting his Lugz Shirt!

THE CORNER – 6 part HBO MINI-SERIES - A year in the life of an inner city neighborhood – a true story showing a family living in poverity amid open-air drug markets in West Baltimore.  This was difficult watching their struggles with little light at the end of the tunnel.  Charles Dutton did an amazing job capturing every gritty detail – and we thank him for allowing us to be a part of this film.

ME MYSELF AND IRENE – On a much lighter note – how funny is Jim Carrey?! Playing a Rhode Island State Trooper with multi-personalities – who just loves his boys!  Check out our friend Anthony Anderson wearing his blue zip up Lugz Shirt.

THE NEPHEW -  A young bi-racial American travels to Ireland following the death of his mother, to meet her family.  The young star – is Hill Harper.  You can see him sporting several Lugz Apparel pieces.

NOTORIOUS – The story of the late, great Christopher Wallace – aka Notorious B.I.G.  We were very fortunate that we had the opportunity to work with Biggie – and were honored to be included in the film.

Mila Kunis: Sexiest Woman Alive?

Well according to Esquire Magazine that is exactly what she is!  Esquire selected Mila to grace their cover this year and adorned her with the title of sexiest of them all!

What makes her even sexier (than the obvious) is that despite a very fruitful career on TV and in movies, she seems to be so grounded and down to Earth.  Here is how she puts it: ”So much of who you are in this industry is based on what that critic says, what that director says, what that actor says. People start believing all that, and they become what everybody else wants them to be. And I think that I’ve consciously separated my two lives. I love what I do. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. But when I’m done with work, I’m done with work. I think that if I bought into the hype, I would lose all sight of who I am.”

Mila also comes from very humble beginnings. When she was 7 years old, her family moved out of The Ukraine with $250 to their name.  They left their jobs behind and came to Los Angeles to escape religious persecution (The family is Jewish) among other hardships. They enrolled Mila and her brother in school and both kids didnt speak a word of English.  Despite that she learned the language quickly and found a niche for herself in acting.

I for one am thankful that her parents moved here back in 1990 because if they hadnt the world wouldnt have known about her.  She is definitely at the very top of my list too! Anybody agree?

Black History Month: James Van Der Zee

James Van Der Zee was an African American Photographer born in 1886.  He was a pioneer during the Harlem Renaissance and is best known for his amazing portraits of black New Yorkers.  The likes of Marcus Garvey and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson just to name a couple of well known and iconic figures from our past.

In addition to being an accomplished and nationally recognized photographer, he was also an extremely talented pianist and violinist in very tough times in American history.  A time, during which many African Americans were denied basic rights, let alone an exploration of the arts.

It is amazing to think how much change and progress James witnessed in his life, having lived until 1983.   We admire his commitment and dedication to the arts throughout a very long life.  James has frequently been honored for his contribution to US History, especially in Harlem, NY and we honor him here today with a post to celebrate great Americans during Black History Month!
